Blog 7: My Sister’s Keeper (The finial)

In this last section of my book, there was a lot of unexpected things that happened. Like I said in my last section, Anna finally chooses to speak up for herself towards the judge. Anna argued that she should have control over her body and has the right to make her own decisions. The judge made the final decision after this long trial to go into Anna’s favor. Anna won the case, her parents took it a lot better than I thought they would. They were more happy that the case was over and the fighting was over. It was like a next step in their family.

How I felt that Anna won the case:

The ending of the book, the author’s writing style started to become more of a self reflection. She used descriptive language to show emotion and create a sense of space. She was writing how each character was feeling like is was coming from that person specifically. All of those things added more depth to the story, so the reader could feel like they were apart of what was happening.

Even though Anna won the case, her parents still had to decide if they wanted to go through with the transplant. That didn’t make much sense to me because I thought since she won, she wouldn’t have to do it. The only reason they had to make that decision was for the sake of Kate. They ended up doing the transplant to help Kate.

Not only were those situations a surprise, but Anna gets in unexpectedly car crash and ended up dying. It was really hard on her family because they were already going through a lot with Kate and the trail. I bet they were regretting for treating Anna so bad because of the decision she made, but they were so focused on Kate that they didn’t realize that Kate could of been the only person taken away from them.

How I felt when Anna died:

One theme towards the end of the book was the importance of cherishing and finding comfort in the memories and love shared with loved ones. Even when Anna’s family were going through a lot of grief in her loss. It highlighted the power of how family can bond and the flexibility of the human spirit. Another theme was the acceptance and moving forward from something that is difficult. Anna’s family found a way to accept she was gone and continuing living their life. This book gives a lot of good messages that can relate to so many people and it makes people realize what life is really like.

It was a bittersweet ending, but they found comfort in the love they shared and the memories they had together. It was not the kind of ending I was expecting which is was emotional, but it made the book more interesting. The whole book was chaotic, but a lot of things were happening throughout it which made it better to read instead of it being boring. I liked my book and I do recommend people reading it.

Post 6: My Sister’s Keeper (New Info)

In this newest section, there has been a new character that has been introduced. His name is taylor and he is a cancer survivor. Kate and him have became close and start to become more than friends. They met at a cancer support group for teens. It’s really sweet how they have something they have in common which makes their relationship become even more special. A plot twist came because his cancer came back and kate was wondering why he wasn’t talking to her. He died and kate didn’t even know. Sara, Kates mom, found out but didn’t end telling her until a month later.

My face when I found out Taylor died:

There is a quote that shows more of the theme of the book. When Jess says, “what we deserve to have, we rarely get”. It reflects how life can be unpredictable and sometimes unfair. Without having in mind our desires or efforts, we don’t always get what we feel we deserve. It’s a tough part of life that the book captures.

When Anna and her father show up to court, her father was supposed to support her choice of not being a donor. Know he isn’t agreeing and it’s harder for the judge to rule in favor of emancipation. Anna now has to testify for herself. Anna is not a fan of doing that, she hates the idea of having to speak her mind in front of her parents. I feel she wants to speak her mind, but she’s afraid of what is going to happen after. If she ends up not testifying, she loses the case. She ends of wanting to talk at the end of the chapter. I’m really interested on what she is going to say, but I will have to wait to read more.

How I feel for Anna finally speaking her mind:

The authors writing is very visual, so when she talks about the courtroom she includes courtroom scenes, the arguments between the characters, and the dilemmas surrounding Anna’s role in the case. it adds more of a layer to the story and keeps people interested when they read.

Another theme in the story shows people’s identity and how they are shaped by our experiences in life, relationships, and the choices we make. The characters in the story get into more of who they really are and could be still searching for their true selves.

This section of my book was one of the best ones. There were some surprising things that happened that I didn’t expect to happen and I found out more about the case and how it is playing out so far. I’m excited to see how everything will turn out with me only having one section of my book left!

Post 5: My Sister’s Keeper (gets better)

In this section of my book, the family’s bonds are tested by each person in the family is going through a tough time because of the whole situation with Anna and Kate. They are feeling guilt, anger, and betrayal. During this process the family is forced to confront their own beliefs and make difficult choices they don’t want to make.. It is just full of different emotions and the family doesn’t know how to hold it all together.

Anna’s trail has started and her mom is still trying to drop hints that she should not go through with this trial and just to help her sister. Her mom is talking to the doctor asking about the transplant like she doesn’t care as to how big of a deal this is turning into. Kate is in the room during all this so it is making Anna feel pretty guilty that she isn’t going to help her sister.

A plot twist has happened within these pages because Kate is slowly dying through all of the drama, but come to find out, Jesse (Anna’s brother), has been giving blood for kate to help her to show his support for her even though he said he didn’t want to do a transplant, he is still helping her in a different way.

My face when I found out what Jesse was doing:

This section was talking a lot about the court and how the trail is starting to go. They have been asking sara, Anna’s mom, a lot of questions about the reason she wanted to make a lawsuit of her. Like I have said before, her mom is kind of just acting like she isn’t doing much wrong. She has made comments like, it’s hard being a mom with a kid of cancer. She wants people to feel bad for her and see where she is coming from.

One theme that stands out is selflessness and sacrifice within the family. Jesse’s act of giving blood to Kate shows the length he is willing to go to support and care for his family. It highlights the unconditional love that still exists in family relationships. There is not much of that because there is a lot of conflict. What Jesse did for Kate is important and should be talked about. He was putting Kate’s needs before his own.

POV: Jesse helping Kate

Her writing style is very descriptive and describing how the emotions flow through the book go with each character. She likes to include multiple perspectives from each character that is in depth. The way she=-writes makes readers like me stay interested in the book because of all the different things going on within the book. It also lets people that are reading reflect on the conflicts that are happening or helps them relate to a specific topic.

Overall, this part was better than the last one. Things changed up a little and there was a plot twist that I didn’t see coming. I enjoyed reading this section and I can’t wait to see if something bigger happens in the next section I read.

Post 4- My Sister’s Keeper (Memories)

The more I read of my book, it kind of feels like it is staying the same with the plot, but with some different situations. It just kind of feels repetitive. Anna is still dealing with the difficult decisions to sue her parents, but her lawyer, Campbell, is definitely helping her through the whole process. Her lawyer makes her feel like she actually can have feelings and have a voice. In her family she felt she never really had that, so it makes there bond special. It makes me feel good for, Anna, because she finally has someone that understands her.

The bond between Anna and Campbell=

In there process of Anna’s situation, kate her sister, is starting to get more sick. She had to go through chemo and had to do all these blood drawings. They are running out of time trying to help kate get better, so maybe they should just find someone else to donate a kidney to her instead of focusing on the fact Anna is the only one they can turn to. Which that is definitely not the case.

It is making me think, when is this whole sueing thing going to end? I don’t think her mom gets the fact that she is not going to change her mind, so she is going to keep trying until she gets what she wants. This shows how a big deal this is because it is affecting the whole family and it is breaking them apart.

They explained flashbacks of all the characters life in the past. Some of them were, Anna playing with kate as young children. Anna and her mom, sara, have a conflict. They also showed kate and her older brother facing challenges while they were growing up. The flashbacks were a big part of this section because it shows what kind of connections each of the character’s had with each other in the past . It’s more of explaining why the character act as they do now, and how all of the memory’s led up to the lawsuit.

I’m still liking my book, but like I said it is kind of getting repetitive because the whole book is really just about the lawsuit. I hope the more I read the more action will happen and some more interesting things will happen.

Post 3: My Sisters Keeper (heart of matter)

This section of my book is when, Anna, has to make a decision that could break or put her family back together. This lawsuit is taking a lot of control over, Anna, and there isn’t much that she can say or do that she hasn’t already done. The courtroom in the book is kind of being similar to a battle ground because there family is being stretched beyond their limits and it is turning ugly. The vision of being right and wrong about the situation is being blurred because they just want each other to hear what they have to say instead of hearing eachother out.

I feel ,Jodi Picoult, chose to put these actions of the characters in this book because it shows us readers how challenges of someone in a family that has a lot of weight on their shoulders. The author is showing the responsibility of, Anna, helping her sister and the conflict of her not wanting to be a donor can cause problems because of someone’s individual rights. It’s also a good message people could know about just by reading this book.

How I felt reading my book:

The more I read of this section the more emotions I was getting from each character and just from the plot of the story. Anna, like I have said in different posts, wants to be able to make her own decisions, but she also loves her sister so it’s hard for her to really make a decision. The mom is torn between both of her daughters because she wants both of them to be happy, but isn’t making the right choices to make them both happy. This section also gave me a lot of questions like, How much sacrifice is too much? Where is the mom going to draw the line between saving and punishing Anna?

I’ve gotten farther in my book and I’m starting to figure out what this book is trying to get across to readers. I feel this book is really just trying to have a message of struggle between doing what’s expected and finding your own path in the process. Anna is sacrificing her own desires for the sake of others and making sure people know her rights. It’s definitely a message that people can relate to and can find her writing about a message like that helpful.

The more I read the more surprises I get and the more emotional it gets. It definitely is keeping me on my toes about the whole situation with the lawsuit and how it’s going to end up with her family and how it will affect everyone. I’m enjoying my book, I’m excited to see what new things are to come within my book.

Post 2: My Sister’s Keeper (intense)

As I am reading more into my book some things are getting a little confusing. Anna is getting to be confusing because she isn’t sure what she wants. She told her lawyer that she still wanted to go through with the lawsuit, but she also told her mom that she didn’t want to go through with it anymore. Her mom is really upset with the whole situation and is basically saying she is going to kill her sister if she isn’t a organ donor.

Jesse, the older sibling, seems like she is really angry in life because her parents aren’t paying much attention to her. Kate went to the hospital because she got really sick, the mom asked if the organ donor was still a possibility, like anna never said she didn’t want to do it. Jesse asked if maybe they could use hers which was nice of her, but she would have to get tested to see if she was healthy even. She was not for sure if she actually wanted to even though she offered.

Anna has a hard time expressing how she feels to people especially her mom, since she told her mom one thing, then her lawyer another, she has to have a guardian ad litem. That is someone who looks after someone that is underage and tries to figure out what the best thing for the kid is. They suggested that Anna gets removed from the house and has no contact by getting a restraining order on her mom. Her ad suggested this because she felt her mom was trying to talk her out of suing. It wasn’t a good idea because she would have more instability in her life.

I can see that Anna and Jesse are similar by acting out in their own ways to help cope with stress they are having at home. Anna is suing and Jesse gets herself into trouble. I wish their mom could see how this situation is really taking a toll on both of them mentally. I do understand their mom wants kate to stay alive but in the process of her worrying about one kid, she is breaking her other kids.

I have been wondering why one of kate’s siblings have to be her organ donor. I know anna was planned to help her sister, but there are a lot of other people that could help her too. Besides the confusing parts I am still liking my book and want to keep reading.

My Sister’s Keeper post 1

As I am reading the beginning of my book, there are a lot of emotional events that are already happening. It shows how each character is feeling which is nice because it’s not just about one character. Anna is the youngest daughter which she is being expected to donate her organs to her sister, Kate, that is sick with leukemia. Anna is feeling the only reason she is in the world is to just save her sister, so she is having a hard time figuring out who she really is. Sara is the mom, which she is overlooking Anna needs because she is so focused on making sure Kate is staying alive. The dad is named, Brian, he is making sure everyone is doing ok not just focusing on one person. Jesse is the oldest sibling who feels invisible half of the time because of this family crisis. During the section I read Anna is really just trying to figure out if she really wants to donate her organs or not. Anna ends up getting a lawyer to sue her parents for medical emancipation which is what I feel a lot of the book is going to be about and this is just the beginning of the conflict.

I am feeling bad for Anna because she has a lot of pressure on her about the situation. She is really young to have to have so much on her plate. It’s also sad that her mom just expects this out of her and it’s hard for her to explain that she really doesn’t want to donate her organs for her sister. I’m sure she would be more willing to make this decision if it wasn’t expected out of her. She doesn’t know what to think about being used for her sister’s medical needs, but Anna wants to be able to make her own decisions in her own life. This book has been really interesting so far, it is better than I intended it to be and I am excited to see what is to come further in the book.

Starter (.5) Post

I’m going to be reading ‘My Sister’s Keeper‘ by Jodi Picoult. I decided to read this book because Mrs. Johnson told me it was a great book for this project, but also it sounds like a really in depth book with a lot of meaning behind it and also sounds really interesting. I don’t feel I will get bored with this book and I will always be interested on what I’m reading. It sounded like it was going to give me a lot of detail and that I will be able to say a lot about my book in future blog posts. What I’m most looking forward most in the future with this project is learning more about this book and seeing how it turns out to be the more I read. Also talking about how I feel instead of in a academic voice. I’m more fearful about not reading my whole section for my book when the blog post is due, so being behind instead of on track. I will be focused on reading my book when I should instead of procrastinating on it.

The audience

Each of those texts has made a big impact on the audience in many different ways. Each of the texts showed different perspectives and ideas. In de las casas wanted more rights for the native americans, Columbus shared his discoveries from his voyages, and red clouds expressed the struggles the native americans had to go through. These things may have changed how the audience seen the native american rights.

De las Casas Text

There are cultural encounters and frontiers because of his interactions with indigenous peoples in the Americas. He saw the different ways they lived there live like when it says “And the Christian’s with their horses and swords and pikes began to carry out massacres” That showed they lived their life and things like that helped him understand the different culture.
